Originally known as the International Union for the Protection of Nature (or IUPN) established in 1948 and renamed the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 1956 (IUCN).Use of the name “World Conservation Union” began in 1990, but the full name and the acronym are often used together as many people still know the Union as IUCN.
The Union’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

CITES CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments which came into force in 1975. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. It now has 172 member states.
Because the trade in wild animals and plants crosses borders between countries, the effort to regulate it requires international cooperation to safeguard certain species from over-exploitation. CITES was conceived in the spirit of such cooperation. Today, it accords varying degrees of protection to more than 30,000 species of animals and plants, whether they are traded as live specimens, fur coats or dried herbs.
CITES is an international agreement to which States (countries) adhere voluntarily. Although CITES is legally binding for those that have joined – in other words they have to implement the Convention – it does not take the place of national laws. Rather it provides a framework to be respected by each Party, which has to adopt its own domestic legislation to ensure that CITES is implemented at the national level.
